Sam Altman Reaches Out to Elon Musk After Old Posts Emerge: “Let’s Be Friends”

Altman’s Olive Branch to Musk over AI Feud

Sam Altman has indicated a desire to collaborate with Elon Musk. This comes after Musk pointed out Altman’s earlier criticisms of Donald Trump on social media. Altman believes that the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is significantly more crucial than their past disagreements.

On May 10, Musk highlighted old posts, implying that Altman wouldn’t support Trump. He referenced a statement from Paul Graham, co-founder of Y Combinator, asserting that Altman had been one of the most vocal opponents of Trump.

Altman responded appreciatively to Graham’s comment. He mentioned an article where Musk had depicted his neutral stance on Trump: “I don’t hate the guy, but it’s really time for him to step aside.” Reflecting on past views, Altman noted that they were both mistaken, specifically regarding 2016, and he seemed to suggest he had evolved since then. “Anyway, see you next week, let’s be friends,” he added, emphasizing the importance of AGI over lingering conflicts.

Musk, a known supporter of Trump, leads the Department of Government Efficiency, aiming to streamline government processes. His backing of Republican candidates during the presidential campaign was seen as pivotal. On the other hand, Altman has shifted his political approach, contributing significantly to the $500 billion Stargate initiative, which focuses on enhancing AI infrastructure in the U.S.

There has been some tension regarding the direction of OpenAI, originally established as a nonprofit in 2015 by Musk among others. Altman’s push to transition it into a for-profit model has drawn criticism. However, OpenAI recently confirmed that the nonprofit will retain control over the organization.

Understanding AGI

AGI represents a next-level AI capability. Unlike traditional AI, which is designed for specific tasks, AGI aims to replicate human-like intelligence that is versatile across numerous domains. Essentially, AGIs strive to understand, learn, and apply knowledge much like humans do.
