Sam Darnold won’t be franchised tagged by Vikings. Here’s what happens next

The Vikings didn't think they were in this position. Sam Darnold was considered a placeholder and caretaker. Instead, he led the Vikings into the playoffs, securing almost the NFC North title, and creating the Pro Bowl in the process. Minnesota needs to think about their future at quarterback in a completely different way, and that decision is looming.

Vikings are currently being reported do not Uses Darnold's franchise tag To keep him one more year, it was expected to be the richest path they could take to maintain the quarterback. But that doesn't mean the team is ready to let him go – negotiations are underway on whether there is a way to move QB forward.

The outcome of the situation in Darnold clearly has a major impact on the Vikings, but it will also shake up the free agency and the NFL Draft. Dominoes are falling only as a result of this decision. Let's break down each path forward and break down what that means for the Viking and beyond.

Option 1: Minnesota re-signs Sam Darnold's long term

What it means for the Viking

Here, it relies heavily on the terms of the contract. Darnold was predicted to be able to earn as much as $50 million a year, given his weak draft class, given his entry into weaker markets. When he was in Lifeline a year ago, it essentially made him a crown jewel.

Darnold's great commitment to moving forward means putting it all in him. That will have a major impact on JJ McCarthy's future in Minnesota. He was drafted to be an obvious heir in QB, but the injury issue paired with Darnold's breakout could potentially consume the team's top pick in 2024. If that happens, there is no shortage of suitors.

What it means for the rest of the NFL

If any team wants to find a future QB in free agency, they now have to pivot. Darnold was essentially the only long-term option available. That means you can settle for a short-term answer like Russell Wilson, or rely on a draft.

Given that the Titans, Raiders and Giants are all desperately in need of QBs, they can pivot to pressure them to take quarterbacks when they didn't plan or try to resolve other arrangements. Alternatively, if this becomes Viking Shopping McCarthy, you should imagine that the Giants and Raiders are particularly interested.

Given the option of taking Cam Ward and Chedure Sanders or swapping a pick with McCarthy, McCarthy could be better than either. One outlet, but on the NFL scouting page, Ward received 6.39 grade, while Sanders scored 6.30. In 2024, McCarthy received the 6.40 grade. It's not outside the realm of the possibility that the Vikings land a top three pick and improve returns from a year ago.

Option 2: Samdarnold Walks

What it means for the Viking

At this point it becomes very complicated for Minnesota. It is unclear when McCarthy could return to full participation after Meniscus surgery, or how he progressed to learning crime before he was injured. It is important to remember that McCarthy was young and was always considered a “project.” So it may take some time for him to be ready.

That means the Vikings need to push him into the first role and see if he should sink or swim, or potentially re-sign Daniel Jones, who provided what he's learned since his signature.

What it means for the rest of the NFL

Bidding war. Plain and simple. At least three teams will be interested in Darnold in free agency. It is unclear what the Steelers, Jets, Browns and Saints have plans for the long term in QB, and that could also enter the QB market.

As for the draft, it means Ward and Sanders are going later than they don't. All you need is one QB Needy team to land Darnold, and the player could fall.

What are the most likely outcomes?

I feel it is very unlikely that the Vikings will change their plans simply because Darnold had a outstanding year. It simply has too much risk for them. They had faith in McCarthy to take the torch, and Darnold was surprised in 2024, but he was still Sam Darnold, which could have been the absolute ceiling he could reach in the NFL.

You can eat much of the cap space available to Darnold. And it's a bad time to make a big commitment to a man without being convinced he's a man. You can take risks by someone else and play smartly. Move forward with McCarthy and see what happens next.
