Sam Darnold's second interception costs Seahawks the game as Broncos win in overtime

DENVER — The Denver Broncos secured a 17-14 win against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night after Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted a pass from Sam Darnold in overtime, which set up a 53-yard field goal by Wil Lutz.

Despite facing injuries and a struggling offense, the Broncos exited a challenging six-week stretch at 4-2. Meanwhile, the Seahawks, now 3-3, have lost twice in just five days, equaling their total losses from last season when they captured their second Super Bowl title.

McMillian’s interception came on a throw intended for Rashid Shaheed at the Denver 43, marking Darnold’s second pick of the night.

Jason Myers tied the game with a 34-yard field goal with only 3 seconds remaining in regulation. Seattle’s drive that evened the score began at midfield, courtesy of a 31-yard punt return by Shaheed following a sixth consecutive three-and-out by the Broncos.

The Broncos seemed poised to win when Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted Darnold at the Denver 30 with just 1:25 left on the clock, but they only managed to run off 15 seconds before punting the ball away.

After a slow start where they only scored three points on their first eight drives, Seattle finally found their rhythm. They orchestrated an impressive 11-play, 67-yard drive culminating in a one-yard touchdown run by George Holani. Darnold then connected with Shaheed for a 2-point conversion, narrowing the Broncos’ lead to 14-11 with 5:41 left in the game.

Bo Nix led the Broncos through two lengthy scoring drives in the first half, while the shorthanded Denver defense managed to sack Darnold five times and hit him a total of 17 times.

Injuries

Seattle tight end Elijah Arroyo left the field late in the first half with a possible right shoulder injury after trying to recover a fumbled ball.

The Broncos were missing star cornerback Patrick Surtain II and starting safety Talanoa Hufanga, both sidelined due to ankle injuries. Running back Tyler Badie hurt his thumb in the second quarter. Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was assessed for a shoulder injury in the third quarter but thankfully returned to play.

Looking Ahead

Seahawks: They will host the Kansas City Chiefs on October 25.

Broncos: They are set to face the Arizona Cardinals at home on October 25.
