Beloved Rangers broadcaster Sam Rosen is recovering well after an apparent health concern, but his recovery will mean he won’t be called up for many playoff games.
ESPN New York’s Don La Greca told listeners on “The Michael Kay Show” that Rosen had been suffering from “dizziness” and had recently gone to the hospital, but has since been doing fine.
Rosen became part of the Rangers’ ESPN Radio broadcast team following the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with television coverage being conducted exclusively by the league’s national rights partner.
“I will also be filling in for Sam Rosen in Games 2, 3 and 4 of the series,” La Greca said during the show. “Sam is okay but I know there are a lot of people out there who are wondering what’s going on with him. He was having dizziness and had to go to hospital. The medical checkup was fine. He’s fine. Everything is fine, but there was a little problem.”
La Greca added that Rosen will not be able to fly during his rest period and will likely miss Friday’s game at the Garden.
La Greca was eliminated from the first game due to a storm in the Midwest, which affected the relocation of the station’s announcer Kenny Albert, who was scheduled to be called up for the series opener.
Albert was also scheduled to call the Western Conference Finals for TNT and didn’t want to risk any travel-related issues.
“He has to leave today so he can get to Dallas before the weather worsens, so that opens up an opportunity for me,” La Greca said.
Rosen has been involved in Rangers broadcasts since the 1984-85 season.
