Sami Zayn Set for WWE Championship Match
Sami Zayn is gearing up for another shot at the WWE Championship this Saturday as he goes head-to-head with Cody Rhodes and Gunther at Champions Night in Saudi Arabia.
The match came about after Zayn officiated a match on Friday Night SmackDown, which got quite heated. Following an intense altercation with Gunther, Zayn counted Rhodes out. Gunther then attacked Zayn after Rhodes insisted SmackDown’s GM Nick Aldis bring in a new referee for a rematch. Now, Zayn faces one of his toughest challenges yet.
Zayn shared his enthusiasm before the event, expressing that being in the main event of such a significant occasion, especially in Saudi Arabia, holds a special meaning for him. “Honestly, there’s no better position than this other than being a champion. That’s the goal here, but I can’t complain,” Zayn stated.
Born in Canada to Syrian parents, Zayn is poised to make history. If he wins, he would be the first WWE World Champion of Syrian descent. He reflected on the significance of potentially winning the title in Riyadh, saying, “It’s hard to process right now… I hope the fans enjoy it. I know I have a personal bias, so it’s tough to gauge.”
He acknowledged that winning the championship would be a big moment, presenting both cultural and historical implications that might surprise him later.
Interestingly, Zayn’s potential victory aligns with Jey Uso’s recent King of the Ring win, leaving a possible title match between them or with the current World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns. When asked about the likelihood of facing Uso, Zayn remarked, “I’ve thought about it a bit. The Bloodline is reuniting differently on Raw, which brings questions about where I fit into that.”
He seemed intrigued by the possibilities, expressing, “It would definitely create an interesting dynamic. We’re on different shows now, so it’s unclear when or if that issue will arise.”
Champions Night is set to take place this Saturday at 1 PM ET and can be viewed on ESPN.
