Samsung has recalled more than 1 million slide-in electric ranges due to a fire hazard after reports of 250 units being caught on fire when the knob on the front was accidentally activated by people or pets.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on Thursday, affecting 30 models priced between $1,250 and $3,050 that were sold in the U.S. between May 2013 and August 2024.
According to separate notices from Samsung and the CPSC, the knobs on the front of the stove can be activated “by accidental contact with a person or pet,” which could pose a fire hazard if flammable materials are placed on the stove.
Prior to the recall, Samsung had received more than 300 reports since 2013 of the front knob being unintentionally activated by people or pets, according to the CPSC.
According to the CPSC, they have been involved in at least 250 fires, 18 of which “caused extensive property damage.”
About 40 injuries were reported, eight of whom required medical treatment, and pets were reported to have died in seven of the fires, according to the recall.
To fix the issue, Samsung is providing a knob lock or knob cover free of charge.
Additionally, the CPSC strongly advises consumers not to place, leave or store any items on their stoves because “such items may ignite if the stove is accidentally activated or left turned on.”
“A fire may be caused if an item is placed on top of a stove that is accidentally activated or left on,” the statement said.
Samsung said in a statement Thursday that consumers can continue to use their slide-in electric ranges while they wait for knob locks or covers to arrive.
To receive a free set of locks or covers, customers can visit the company’s website, call Samsung’s toll-free number at 1-833-775-0120, or contact the company via email.
Meanwhile, Samsung said it has introduced a new slide-in range in April 2024 that incorporates a three-stage precision knob that requires a “pinch” action before a “push and turn” to power it on, to ensure the knob is activated intentionally.
Additionally, Samsung ranges with Wi-Fi connectivity can send notifications to alert users when a burner is activated, provided they have the Samsung SmartThings app installed. Select Samsung range models also come with illuminated knobs that display a “distinctive blue LED light” around the base of the knob when a burner is activated.
