A pair of giant pandas will soon travel to the United States from China and be cared for at the San Diego Zoo as part of an ongoing conservation partnership between the two countries, officials announced Monday.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance announced that caretakers recently traveled to China to meet giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of a planned trip to Southern California. The exact date of the handover has not been determined.

Yun Chuan, a gentle male who is almost 5 years old, has “deep ties” to California, the Wildlife Alliance said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao.

Outside of China, pandas can only be found in five zoos around the world:

Xin Bao is described as a “kind, witty, and introverted girl, almost four years old, with a kind round face and big ears.”
