Tragic Incident Involving Homeless Outreach Worker
On Friday, a homeless outreach worker was fatally shot outside the main library in San Francisco after he reportedly advised a man against using drugs.
Joey Alexander, aged 60, was employed by Urban Alchemy, a nonprofit organization focused on reducing crime and drug use in public spaces. Reports indicate that he was shot by a suspect after he confronted him about drug use near the library. A spokesperson for the organization mentioned that the situation escalated following a brief exchange with the man.
Authorities have arrested a suspect named Bowen on murder charges. Alexander had been living in Oakland for the past couple of years while working with Urban Alchemy. He was known for his commitment to turning his life around and helping others do the same.
The organization expressed sorrow over Alexander’s death, describing his life as one that transformed pain into purpose. They shared that the ripple effect of such violence extends beyond the individual, affecting families, colleagues, first responders, and the broader community.
In a statement shared on social media, Urban Alchemy emphasized Alexander’s legacy and the importance of individuals with past struggles in the community. The organization remarked, “Our practitioners undertake some of the most challenging and vital work in the city.”
Following the shooting, Alexander was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries days later. His brother Marvin reflected on Joey’s passion for his work, stating that he aimed to rectify his past mistakes and found meaning in his job.
