Caltrans Offers Free Air Purifiers During Bridge Closure

Here’s some good news for residents in Southern California. Caltrans is giving away free HEPA air purifiers to those who might face poor air quality due to the closure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

Households situated near the detour routes in Wilmington, San Pedro, and nearby areas can pick up one Medify Air MA-40 purifier along with three replacement filters, but only while supplies last.

The HEPA filters in these machines are designed to trap dust, smoke, pollen, pet dander, and other particles in the air. They usually cost several hundred dollars, so this is quite a valuable offer.

The initiative aims to maintain better indoor air quality. As construction leads to increased traffic on nearby roads, the potential rise in pollution levels could impact those living close by.

To be eligible, residents need to live within 750 feet of designated detour routes like Pacific Coast Highway, Anaheim Street, Harry Bridges Boulevard, Alameda Street, Guffey Street, and the East I Street Interchange.

L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn mentioned on Instagram that Caltrans has sent postcards containing unique registration codes to possibly eligible households.

Residents will need to input their codes on the program’s website for address verification and to reserve a purifier. Following that, they’ll receive an email with pickup instructions.

At pickup, proof of residence is a must, which can include official mail, a rental agreement, or work/school documents. A photo ID isn’t required, though. This program will continue until June 2027, with the reservation and waitlist deadline set for May 1st.
