Bernie Sanders Voices Concerns About AI’s Impact
In a recent interview, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) expressed his thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI), describing it as a “sci-fi horror” scenario that isn’t as imaginary as many might believe. He argued there’s a lack of robust discourse on how the United States should confront this emerging technology.
Sanders referenced a symposium he attended at Georgetown where he engaged with Jeffrey Hinton, a leading figure in the AI field, often called its godfather and a Nobel Prize laureate. Hinton posits that AI may soon surpass human intelligence, making the fears surrounding AI’s potential dominance more plausible than most people assume. “I think we’re just beginning to scratch the surface of this conversation,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper.
During his talk, Sanders emphasized that AI represents “the most important technology in human history” and highlighted that the wealthiest individuals are shaping this technological revolution. “People like Elon Musk, Zuckerberg, and Bezos—these billionaires are investing vast resources into advancing AI. I mean, do they really worry about how this tech could impact everyday workers? It’s more about enhancing their power and wealth,” he stated.
Sanders suggested that the U.S. government should contemplate a pause on the development of AI data centers. Major corporations, including Google and OpenAI, are allocating substantial budgets towards these projects. “Perhaps we need to take a serious look at pressing the brakes on this,” he remarked. “It’s not just about the tech elite telling us to adjust; we need to demand clarity and discussion.”
He raised questions about the consequences of job losses due to AI. “If positions are eliminated, what’s the solution? Are CEOs going to make housing free? I think it’s vital for us to take a pause and reassess this movement. One way to do that could be implementing a moratorium on data center construction,” he suggested.
Moreover, Sanders stressed the importance of understanding AI’s impact on society. He voiced concerns regarding the younger generation’s well-being, suggesting that the challenges they face today—like diminished attention spans—deserve attention. “We have to ensure our kids are getting the emotional support they need. It’s crucial for their development,” he commented.
Lastly, he warned that if research reveals that AI contributes to increased isolation or mental health issues, it would be essential for lawmakers to take steps to address that.
