Senator Calls for Investigation into Health Committee Dismissals

Senator Bernie Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, is urging the Senate Health Committee to initiate a bipartisan investigation into the recent termination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from his role as Secretary of Health and Human Services, which affected all members of the vaccine advisory committee.

In a letter addressed to Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana, Sanders characterized the removal of members from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) as an “unprecedented decision” that could significantly harm public health in America.

“I am requesting that we soon launch a bipartisan investigation into these dismissals and closely monitor actions that have misled the public about vaccine safety and effectiveness,” Sanders stated in his letter.

A representative from the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee has not yet commented on the letter.

Kennedy, known for his long-standing opposition to vaccines, dismissed the entire panel of 17 members last week. He argued that a “clean sweep” was necessary to eliminate conflicts of interest and to restore faith in vaccinations and public health. In their place, he appointed eight new members, some of whom are known critics of vaccines.

This action marked a dramatic shift in Kennedy’s efforts to reform vaccine policy in the U.S. Sanders pointed out that one of the promises Cassidy secured from Kennedy during the confirmation process was now “directly contradictory.”

Prior to his congressional career, Cassidy, who is a physician, gained recognition for vaccinating low-income children. He reportedly expressed strong reservations about Kennedy’s views on vaccines before eventually voting to confirm him.

Following the dismissals from ACIP, Louisiana Republicans have been noncommittal about whether Kennedy breached the agreement, instead highlighting various social media posts. “Now, there’s concern that ACIP will be filled with individuals who only harbor skepticism about vaccines,” Sanders noted in his letter.

In his correspondence, Sanders emphasized that Cassidy’s “fears have been fully realized.”
