Former Representative George Santos (R-N.Y.), currently facing more than seven years in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud and identity theft, has expressed his desire for leniency from President Trump.
“Whatever the president is willing to offer, I would gladly accept,” Santos mentioned during an interview with British media figure Piers Morgan on his show “Uncensored” this past Thursday.
“I would be really grateful if the president takes my situation into account, considering I’ve been in a seven-year, three-month prison term for a first-time offense linked to the campaign,” he continued.
The ex-lawmaker indicated that he had submitted a request for the White House’s intervention before heading to prison in July.
Santos, who was elected to represent New York’s affluent Long Island District 3 in 2022, made history as the first openly gay Republican to win a House seat. Unfortunately, his tenure was short-lived, as numerous fabrications about his career surfaced during his campaign. In 2023, the House voted 311-114 to expel him over ethics violations.
“I think that decision was quite unfair and has a lot of political influence behind it,” he remarked on Thursday. “I think there was a lot of politicization around the process.”
The White House has not yet provided a comment on this matter, but Trump has shown an openness to utilizing his presidential powers to assist fellow political figures facing legal issues.
Recently, he pardoned a former Republican lawmaker from Tennessee.
“God bless America; those were tough four years, given the prosecutions I faced, along with President Trump and others,” Senator Brian Kelsey stated in a social media post about his pardon.
During his conversation with Morgan, Santos criticized former Attorney General Merrick Garland, claiming that Garland unfairly targeted Trump and his allies using the Justice Department.
“Merrick Garland was the most dishonorable person to serve as attorney general in the United States,” Santos declared.
