Days ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles’ visit to the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl win, running back Saquon Barkley took a notable step. Recently coming off a season where he achieved over 2,000 rushing yards, which netted him the Offensive Player of the Year award, Barkley joined President Donald Trump on Air Force One for a day of golf at a course in Bedminster, New Jersey.
At that time, Barkley expressed his surprise but defended his choice. He noted on social media that some individuals were unhappy about his golfing with Trump and visiting the White House. “Maybe I just respect the president,” he explained. Barkley added, “I played golf with Obama a while ago and I’m looking forward to finishing my round with Trump!” He then suggested that people should not focus on his political associations and wished everyone a good day.
Similarly, New York Giants quarterback Jackson Dart faced backlash when he introduced Trump at a New York event in May. Barkley seemed to recognize the challenges of mixing sports and politics, commenting that being an athlete often comes with undue scrutiny. “I played golf with Mr. Trump and Barack Obama. The day I played with Mr. Trump, he said all these crazy things about me,” he mentioned, referring to the divisive nature of public perception.
In reflecting on the criticism, Barkley stated that he made a personal choice and acknowledged the fallout. He noted how society frequently labels individuals into categories. But, he emphasized that playing golf with a president doesn’t define someone. He reiterated the remarkable opportunity that comes with winning a Super Bowl and visiting the White House, recognizing that such opportunities aren’t guaranteed to come again.
While Barkley was offered a spot on Trump’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, he declined it. The criticism that Dart encountered wasn’t only external; it also stemmed from teammates like defensive lineman Abdul Carter, who questioned the optics of Dart’s situation, stating it appeared insincere. However, after discussing matters publicly, Dart and Carter managed to reconnect positively.
Barkley mentioned that he appreciated his conversation with Dart and was pleased to see the Giants’ quarterback move forward from the ordeal, focusing once more on his game.
