Sara Haines from The View States Republicans Are Attempting to Use Charlie Kirk’s Death to Make Free Speech a Political Issue

Free Speech Debate on The View

This morning’s episode of The View tackled the topic of free speech in light of recent events.

Following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Attorney General Pam Bondy remarked on the Katy Miller Podcast that the government is both “targeting” and “chasing” individuals involved in hate speech. After receiving backlash, she clarified her statement on X, asserting that “Hate speech that crosses boundaries with the threat of violence is not protected by the First Amendment. It is a crime.”

Alyssa Farrr Griffin expressed her concern over Bondy’s comments, suggesting that the pursuit of free speech may contradict Kirk’s message. “Charlie Kirk vehemently opposed any crackdown on free speech. He stood up for the right to express even the most disliked opinions, so it feels inconsistent with his legacy,” she said.

Sarah Haynes shared similar sentiments, indicating that even “ugly speech” is protected by the First Amendment. “Let’s keep America free,” she urged.

She noted that leadership discussions around free speech seem politicized, arguing that politicizing Kirk’s death detracts from its true spirit. “I don’t think his memory should be weaponized for political gain, especially when he advocated for the protection of free expression,” she emphasized.

Griffin highlighted recent incidents where individuals lost their jobs for celebrating Kirk’s death, making a distinction between government attempts to regulate speech and the cultural consequences people face.

“If you’re a step away from their values, companies can decide not to keep you employed,” she pointed out. “Seeing videos of young people celebrating Charlie Kirk’s death is horrifying and wrong. It’s time to check your soul and reflect.”

The View airs on ABC weekdays beginning November 10th.
