Sarah Michelle Gellar argues that changing societal values are responsible for the decline in long-lasting relationships.
In September, the 47-year-old actress and her two children, Freddie Prinze Jr., 48, celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary.
In an interview with FOX News Digital, Geller, along with her Dexter co-star Patrick Gibson, reflected on the secret to a long-lasting marriage.
“I think everything takes effort, whether it's a friendship, a work relationship, or a marriage,” the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star said.
“You have to try,” she continued. “And we now live in a very disposable society.”
“If your phone breaks, we don't fix it. You get a new one,” Geller added. “And I think that's a big part of the attitude toward relationships.”
“And, I don't know, probably separate bathrooms,” the actress joked.
Geller and Prinze Jr. first met while filming the 1997 hit horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer and began dating in 2000.
The couple announced their engagement in 2001 and tied the knot in Mexico a year later, when Geller was 24 and Prinze was 26.
Prior to the wedding, Prinze Jr. appeared on “The Howard Stern Show,” in which the shock jock made a $1 million bet that the marriage would not work out.
“So are you going to marry Sarah Michelle Gellar even though you know it won't last long?” Stern asked.
“Oh, it definitely continues,” Prinze Jr. replied.
“I'd like to make a written bet with you,'' the radio host told him. “In about 10 years, you're going to corner me and say, 'Howard, I owe you money.'
On their 20th wedding anniversary, Geller uploaded a screenshot of the interview to her Instagram Story.
“@SternShow, I think you owe us something,” she wrote via Us Weekly.
Prinze Jr. later shared Geller's post to his Instagram Story, writing, “She will never forget,” along with two laughing and crying emojis.
In a 2019 interview with Us Weekly, Geller said that “communication” was the key to their successful marriage.
“The important thing is to be present,” the New York native said. “Listening is the most important thing.”
“We still make each other laugh. And we still treat each other with respect,” Prinze Jr. added, adding that after their first kiss, “I'm not going on another date.” There wasn't,” he said.
“It was just Sarah,” he spat to the magazine.
The couple, who co-starred in 2002's Scooby-Doo and the 2004 sequel Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed, welcomed their first child, daughter Charlotte Grace, in 2009.
In 2012, Geller gave birth to her son, Rocky James.
Geller and Prinze Jr. both first rose to fame in the 1990s, becoming two of the biggest stars of their era.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Geller shared his thoughts on how celebrity life in the '90s was different from life today.
“I think with the advent of social media and everyone having a camera phone,” she said. “I think you had more anonymity. Sometimes I think that made the storytelling a little easier because people didn't know as much about your every move or even about your show.”
“It's hard not to give away spoilers,” Geller added. “When you have to keep a secret, you do a lot of indoor shows.”
The actress stars in Showtime's new series “Dexter: Original Sin,” which premiered on Dec. 13.
“Dexter: Original Sin” is a prequel series to the network's hit serial killer show “Dexter,” which aired for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013 and starred Michael C. Hall in the title role.
The synopsis for Dexter: Original Sin reads: “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Gibson) as he transitions from student to serial killer avenger. .
When he can no longer ignore his bloodthirsty urges, Dexter must learn how to transform his inner darkness. ”
“Guided by his father Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a code designed to help him find and kill people who should be excluded from society without attracting the attention of law enforcement.
This is an especially big challenge for young Dexter, who begins his forensic internship with the Miami Police Department. ”
Geller will play Dexter's new boss, Tanya Martin, a CSI chief for the Miami Metro Police Department.
The show will feature Hall as narrator, as well as Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson and James Martinez.
In an interview with FOX News Digital, Geller expressed his excitement to join the cast of the prequel series and revealed that he is a huge fan of “Dexter.”
“I loved the original,” she said. “And obviously I didn't have a chance to be a part of it. So in my head I'm like, 'That's a shame.' It would have been fun to be part of that norm. ”
Geller continued, “Then this show comes around again and you're like, 'Wait, I got a chance to be on the show that I loved so much?'” [it] It will be a dream-like opportunity. ”
Gibson told Fox News Digital that it was “a lot of fun” playing Dexter as a young man and portraying his journey.
“The Dexter we all know is pretty fully formed by the time he shows up in Season 1 of The Originals,” he noted. “So I ended up playing someone who was at that stage in their life, and I know that I was very awkward at that point in my life.”
“You're like one foot as a teenager and one foot as an adult,” Gibson added. “Adults don't take you seriously.”
“You don't fit in with people,” agreed the actress.
“You're not a kid either,” Gibson said. “And you're also experiencing a lot of these firsts. In this case, you just happen to be killing people.”
“Hey, everyone has their first time,” Geller said.
“And you always remember your first time,” Gibson said. “That's not always the best thing.”
The 29-year-old actor has previously appeared in TV series “The Tudors,” “The OA” and “Shadow and Bone.”
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Gibson said there were “a lot of unique challenges” to playing a character already familiar to viewers.
“Partly it was to maintain continuity with what Michael had done,” he said. “What I loved about Michael's performance is that when you meet him, he sees so much of himself in the role.”
Gibson continued: “Just leaving an impression would be a bit cold even for a psychopath, so it was important to find a balance between the two.”
“But it was also like remembering it,” he added. “I think as actors, we're trained to be empathetic on set, and you're working with some of the greatest actors of all time.”
“And I like to remind myself that I'm not really affected by the situations that are going on and that I'm a much more calculating person than I look. It was a bit of a challenge.”
New episodes of “Dexter: Original Sin” will air every Friday on Showtime through February 14th.
