Jets Breathe a Sigh of Relief with Sauce Gardner’s Return

There’s a sense of relief among the Jets regarding Sauce Gardner’s status. The standout cornerback was somewhat limited in Thursday’s practice due to a groin injury but returned to full participation on Friday without any further injury designation following a crash at home the previous Sunday. Gardner had initially sustained the injury during practice.

Gardner reflected on the Jets’ loss to the Steelers in the first week, attributing part of the defeat to his limited preseason play due to calf injuries. This, he explained, contributed to the groin issue.

He recently completed his first game as the league’s highest-paid cornerback, having signed a lucrative four-year, $120 million contract extension in the offseason.

In that game, he did an impressive job covering DK Metcalf, shadowing him all over the field. He allowed only one reception for 11 yards on 30 of the 34 pass attempts directed at him. His performance earned him a top-notch grade of 90.3, the best among all cornerbacks in the NFL.

Looking ahead to Sunday, Gardner is expected to play a crucial role in managing the Bills’ dynamic offense led by Josh Allen. He’ll likely be tasked with covering Keon Coleman, who had a notable Week 1 outing with eight catches for 112 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens.

In addition to Gardner’s positive news, the Jets received updates about other injuries. Star defensive tackle Ed Oliver has been ruled out due to an ankle injury, a significant loss since he recorded six tackles, including three for a loss and a sack last week.

Running back Breece Hall mentioned that a miscommunication between him and the offensive line during the loss last week affected the team’s performance late in the game, resulting in a mere 12 yards on the last two drives. However, Hall expressed optimism that these issues have been resolved.

“We’re out there trying to communicate what we’re seeing,” Hall said. “As running backs, we need to adapt to what the offensive line intends to do. We’re just trying to make sure we’re all on the same page, especially when the defense brings extra pressure.”

On a different note, defensive lineman Jay Tufele (illness) and running back/returner Kenne Nwangu (hamstring) will not participate in Sunday’s game.
