“Today” host Savannah Guthrie is reportedly “furious” following early assertions that her brother-in-law was the primary suspect in her mother Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, as shared by former NBC colleague Megyn Kelly.
Kelly indicated that Guthrie’s anger became apparent after journalist Ashley Banfield suggested her brother-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, might have been involved in the kidnapping that occurred on February 1 in Tucson, Arizona.
With speculation that Guthrie might pursue legal action against Banfield over these unfounded claims, Kelly expressed regret over his earlier comments, especially after the Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the family’s involvement.
“While we can’t confirm the family’s intentions to sue Ashley Banfield, it’s clear Savannah is upset about the report and doesn’t believe there’s any truth to the allegations against her brother-in-law,” Kelly stated during a recent episode of SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show.
“Can you really blame her? Naturally, she cares for her sister and, I think, has affection for her brother-in-law. I doubt she sincerely thinks they had any part in this,” he added.
According to investigators, Nancy was last seen with Cioni and his wife, Annie Guthrie, after they shared dinner the night before she went missing.
Just a few days following her disappearance, Banfield referenced comments made by a law enforcement official on-air who noted that Cioni was being considered as a potential suspect.
Banfield continued her reporting even after Sheriff Chris Nanos assured there was no person of interest in the case.
