Savannah Guthrie’s Emotional Appeal Sparks Concerns
Savannah Guthrie’s recent message to the kidnappers of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing for several days, has raised unsettling questions among experts.
In a second Instagram video shared over the weekend, Savannah, age 54, spoke directly to her mother’s abductors. “We got your message and we understand,” she said, expressing urgency alongside her siblings, Annie and Camron Guthrie, aged 56 and 61 respectively.
She implored them, “We ask that you give our mother back to us so we can celebrate together. This is very important to us, and we will pay for it.”
Tracy Walder, a former CIA officer and FBI agent, later commented on the message, saying it felt “very contrived” and “scripted.” She pointed out the use of phrases that seemed more akin to coded language, noting that words like, “This is something of great value to us,” felt unusual given the severity of the situation.
A contributor from NewsNation even raised the troubling question, “Is this a ransom for a dead body? Are we paying to get a deceased person back?”
Walder further observed a shift between the emotional tone of this video and the previous one, noting that the earlier video captured the siblings speaking of their mother in lively terms. In contrast, she described the latest as “quiet” and “brooding,” suggesting it lacked warmth.
“They seem methodical and purposeful in their words,” she added, interpreting the language of “celebrate” as hinting at a memorial rather than a reunion.
Walder also noted Savannah’s demeanor, suggesting she appeared “defeated” and lacking hope. It wasn’t surprising, she mentioned, that the family might consider a financial exchange, as anyone in their situation would do anything to bring back an elderly parent.
Former FBI agent Jason Pack commended Savannah’s courageous and open approach, indicating that it revealed much about the Guthrie family. “When she mentioned wanting to ‘celebrate’ with her mother, it wasn’t an accidental choice of words,” he explained. “It conveys a desire to reconnect rather than seek revenge.” He emphasized the genuine and transparent nature of Savannah’s plea, stating it showed her vulnerability to the entire nation.
Amid differing perspectives, Pack asserted that the family’s attitude suggested they are treating the situation as if their mother is still alive, which he believes is the appropriate approach.
