“Oats are an excellent base due to their complex carbohydrates,” says Yvette Hill, a registered dietitian based in Colorado. “They’re a good source of fiber, which helps increase satisfaction during the morning.” She points out that savory oats can also keep blood sugar levels steady, making them a smart choice for breakfast.
Interestingly, Hill emphasizes that flavorful oats are just as convenient. “You can use leftover protein from dinner or simply utilize eggs you have on hand for overnight oats,” she explains. As social media continues to influence eating habits, many Americans are turning towards breakfast traditions from various cultures, stepping away from solely sweet options.
A notable player in this trend is Gamsa Foods, a New York City-based food manufacturer that recently introduced Korean-style oatmeal at the summer 2025 Fancy Food Show. Their garlic-flavored oatmeal combines ingredients like oats, quinoa, sesame, and tamari, creating a quick and tasty breakfast option.
According to Gamsa co-founder Sarah Hwang, this oatmeal is reminiscent of comforting childhood meals. She describes it as “cozy, familiar, and nourishing,” and suggests topping it off with sesame oil, kimchi, or chili flakes.
Dr. Annie Fenn, who runs Brain Health Kitchen, often swaps out maple syrup for a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil on her oats. Not only does olive oil enhance flavor, but it also contributes healthy fats, which may help alleviate bloating, support heart health, and offer cognitive benefits.
“Its single saturated fat and antioxidant-rich polyphenols can reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and lower LDL cholesterol,” she shares, adding that it might also bolster brain function and decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s.
Health experts appreciate the endless possibilities that savory oats provide for boosting protein content with ingredients like eggs, shredded chicken, or tofu. Adding slices of avocado draws inspiration from the popular avocado toast trend. Hill mentions that toppings like seeds and generous amounts of olive oil are also great additions.
It’s fascinating how this trend has blossomed on platforms like TikTok, where users showcase their unique takes on savory oat bowls, featuring components like bone broth, garlic, bok choy, and sunny-side-up eggs. Many find it to be the ideal alternative for those who aren’t particularly fond of sweet breakfasts.
As one TikTok user put it, “I wasn’t convinced until I tried savory oatmeal!” This shift in breakfast dynamics certainly adds a flavorful layer to morning meals.
