Carmel School Board Member’s Comments Spark Outrage

A school board member from upstate New York has stirred controversy with his remarks regarding New York City voters, whom he accused of facilitating an “Islamic takeover of Western society” by electing Zoran Mamdani as mayor. This has led to a strong backlash from parents and community members, according to local news.

Michael Torpey, a trustee for the Carmel Central Schools, shared his controversial remarks in a Facebook video on election night. Local news sources report that he expressed gratitude to New York City voters for a perceived positive effect on his recent school board meeting, stating, “Thanks to the good people of New York City and their infinite wisdom.” He further claimed that Mamdani, who became noteworthy only recently, hadn’t achieved anything in his public service career.

His comments included a congratulatory message to New York City for what he described as their contribution to the “Islamic takeover” narrative. Unsurprisingly, these statements elicited swift condemnation from parents and school authorities.

One concerned parent, Abigail Santana, described her reaction to the video: “It didn’t sit right with me. The grin on his face, the bigoted remarks—everything about that video made my skin crawl.” Another parent, Mike Falloon, suggested that Torpey should either resign or be removed from his position on the board.

Carmel Schools Superintendent Michael Plotkin issued a statement denouncing Torpey’s remarks, emphasizing that such comments were offensive and that attacks on any community member would not be tolerated. He stressed the significant impact of words, especially from those in public office.

In light of the growing criticism, Torpey later issued an apology, claiming he did not aim to upset the Muslim community with his comments. He acknowledged that his choice of words was inappropriate and implied that his remarks could be misinterpreted.

As of now, it is unclear if the school board will take further action against Torpey, who has a term lasting until 2028. Attempts to reach him and the school district for comment were unsuccessful.

Mamdani, a socialist and notable figure, is set to become New York City’s first Muslim mayor when he officially takes office in January.
