Schools Deserve ‘Escalating’ Pressure to Fix Problems, But Not What Trump’s Doing

In an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday, former Harvard professor and former president Harry Summers argued that higher education institutions deserve to be “a very serious” mistake and “escalate strength and put pressure on them to change it.” And although he even agreed to multiple school civil rights investigations on anti-Semitism, the Trump administration’s approach was wrong.

“Yes, universities have made some very serious mistakes. Yes, they should be pressured and put into pressure with escalating forces to change it. I have not even disputed the way the Biden administration launched civil rights lawsuits regarding various universities and anti-Semitism,” Summers said.

He continued. “And this escalated yesterday in a deeply troubling way for David to escalate. It suggested that the President of the United States was engaged on social media to a personal specific tax issue, namely Harvard’s 501(c)(3), which would be determined based on his political status.

Summers also said the government has no power to determine which beliefs are evaluated and which beliefs are not in Harvard faculty and it makes no sense to cut research funding.
