Democratic Leaders Congratulate Mamdani on Mayoral Primary Win
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries extended their congratulations to Zohran Mamdani for his surprising yet clear victory in the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City. However, they have refrained from endorsing any party candidates in the race.
“I’ve known Zoran Mamdani from our collaboration on providing debt relief for struggling taxi drivers and opposing fracked gas plants in Astoria,” Schumer noted. He mentioned speaking with Mamdani on Wednesday morning and expressed eagerness to meet up soon.
Jeffries also reached out to Mamdani that same morning, hinting at a future meeting in central Brooklyn.
“Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani on a significant victory,” Jeffries stated. He praised Mamdani for his strong focus on economic issues and highlighted the impactful campaign he ran in New York City to address the high cost of living.
Despite their congratulations, neither Schumer nor Jeffries officially backed Mamdani during the primary.
Mamdani declared victory early Wednesday morning, emerging ahead of former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, whom he acknowledged was a significant contender. At just 33 years old, Mamdani is a member of the American Democratic Socialists and has been seen as a progressive outsider throughout the campaign. Cuomo, a well-known figure, had been favored since announcing his candidacy in March.
Following the primary results, Republican campaigns in the House and Senate rapidly sought to connect Schumer and Jeffries to Mamdani. The National Republican Congressional Committee stated, “All Democrats are now accountable for Mamdani’s radical socialist agenda, which includes reimbursing police, abolishing prisons, and halting deportations of criminals.”
Additionally, the National Republican Senators Committee accused Schumer of aligning with socialists who allegedly do not support Israel’s identity as a Jewish nation.
