Schumer Attempts to Link Boat Crash to Trump’s Policies
Chuck Schumer, the Democratic minority leader from New York, attempted to link the liability for a boat crash involving a Mexican vessel against the Brooklyn Bridge to President Donald Trump’s policies, but his claims were quickly countered.
The Cuauhtémoc, a 297-foot sailing ship, set off from New York City heading to Iceland but encountered problems and veered into the bridge on Saturday. Tragically, two naval cadets lost their lives, and at least 19 others sustained injuries as three of the ship’s masts broke.
During his weekly press conference on Sunday, Schumer suggested that budget cuts under Trump could be to blame for the incident. He stated, “There are signs the vessel traffic services may have been incompetent or not functioning properly due to the employment freeze. I’m not sure about that yet, but it’s worth investigating.”
He elaborated that the ongoing hiring freeze at the Department of Homeland Security, which affects the Coast Guard, could be hampering essential services like VTS (vessel traffic services) and air traffic control in busy coastal areas, including New York’s ports.
However, the U.S. Coast Guard declared on Sunday that the VTS was “fully operational” at the time of the accident. The Department of Homeland Security dismissed Schumer’s allegations as unfounded. They emphasized, “The U.S. Coast Guard is fully supported and not affected by employment freezes. The incident was unrelated to the vessel’s transport services. If the ship loses propulsion in areas with strong currents, it is expected to halt all operations.”
This has led to some debate and conversation around the timing and accuracy of Schumer’s comments, with officials urging him to clarify his statements to avoid misinforming the public.
