On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) indicated that he is placing holds on all political candidates for the Department of Justice. This comes as President Trump prepares to receive a luxury jet from Qatar that is intended to be used as a new Air Force aircraft.
This marks the first time Schumer has employed such a sweeping hold, reflecting his displeasure with the notion of Trump accepting a gift worth approximately $400 million. Trump’s trip to the Middle East includes a visit to Qatar, where he is expected to announce an arms deal.
“This isn’t just blatant corruption; it poses a serious risk to national security,” Schumer remarked during his speech on the Senate floor. “I will actively work to block this astonishing politicization at the Department of Justice until the American public knows the full details of this deal.”
Furthermore, Schumer urged the DOJ’s Foreign Agent Registration Act unit to reveal all activities related to Qatari foreign agents that could benefit the president or his business ventures.
He raised several questions, including the readiness of the jet and various safety concerns noted by him and some Republicans, as well as the implications of the contract between the U.S. government and Boeing.
“Is this not a clear case of corruption?” Schumer pressed. “[Attorney General Pam Bondi] Both the House and Senate must come forward to clarify why providing Donald Trump with a private jet doesn’t breach the emoluments clause or other ethical standards that mandate Congressional approval.”
Before joining the DOJ, Bondi served as a registered lobbyist for the Qatari government.
Schumer continued, “Donald Trump’s business dealings are compromising his ability to serve the public in the Middle East. He’s not just blurring the line between public service and personal gain; he’s erasing it.” He expressed his concern about how Trump is misrepresenting the necessity of the aircraft.
According to reports, three DOJ candidates are pending confirmation votes, but Schumer noted that these holds could impact numerous others.
Trump has defended his decision, stating he was “foolish” not to accept the plane for his presidential library post-term.
Nevertheless, Senate Republicans have shown hesitance, citing concerns over the arrangement.
“I’ve tried to refrain from selling arms to Qatar due to their human rights abuses,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) commented on Fox News Monday. “I’ve never been particularly supportive of them. I’m skeptical that our evaluation of their human rights practices isn’t clouded by this significant gift.”
“I’m not taking it. That’s just my stance,” he added.
Other senators echoed Schumer’s safety concerns, questioning the reliability of the aircraft for the President.
“I’m not a fan of Qatar. They’ve shown a troubling trend of supporting extremist groups that threaten us,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said on CNBC Tuesday. “I worry that this situation could lead to espionage and surveillance issues. So, yes, I have serious concerns.”
Some held a firmer stance.
Trump supporter Sen. Rick Scott (R-FLA) stated on Monday, “I wouldn’t fly on anything affiliated with Qatar; they support Hamas. I can’t see how we could ensure safety.” He remarked about the implications of accepting a plane amid such complexities, saying, “I wouldn’t want the President on an unsafe aircraft.”
