Sen. Chuck Schumer (New York) called on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to introduce “specialized drone detection” technology to New York and New Jersey.
“Amid drone sightings, I want answers,” Schumer posted. Social platform. “I am calling on @SecMayorkas to deploy specialized drone detection technology across New York and New Jersey.”
Schumer said he is working to pass a bill in the Senate that would give local police departments more tools for drone detection.
In recent days, reports of drone sightings have increased across New Jersey and New York. This sighting sparked intrigue and concern.
The FBI said it had been monitoring the incident for the past several weeks and was investigating possible witnesses.
In a statement to DHS, the FBI reiterated that the agency has no reason to believe that the drone sightings pose a national security concern or threat to public safety.
Sen. Andy Kim (DN.J.) went out with local police to personally identify the drone.
Kim determined that some of the mysterious drone sightings were “almost certainly planes.”
“I'm not discounting the possibility that others witnessed actual drone activity. Not everything I saw was completely explained by the flight path, but most of it was,” Kim he wrote.
He insisted that federal agencies investigate the sightings and said he would try to get more answers about what was happening.
Kim, along with Schumer and other Democratic senators from New Jersey and New York, co-signed a letter urging federal agencies such as DHS and the Federal Aviation Administration to investigate the issue.
The Hill has reached out to DHS for comment.
