Schumer criticized for saying 'go Bills' before discussing Sydney shooting

Schumer’s Controversial Comments Following Australian Shooting

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) faced backlash on Sunday for unexpectedly shouting “Go Bills” right before discussing the tragic mass shootings that occurred in Australia during a press conference.

“Initially, I want to bring up Instacart and how they exploit consumers. Then, I’ll address the dreadful mass shooting in Sydney, Australia. And, of course, as I always say, no matter what—go Bills. They beat the Patriots today, which is a big deal,” Schumer stated during his remarks.

Law enforcement reported on Monday that a father and son committed the shootings at Bondi Beach while people were celebrating Hanukkah, resulting in 16 fatalities, including one of the shooters, and left 40 others injured.

Media Criticism Surrounding Schumer

In the aftermath, Representative Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) commented on a clip from Schumer’s speech, suggesting he should “retire immediately.” Schumer’s office did not respond to requests for clarification.

Pradheep Shankar, a contributor to National Review, expressed that it was “an embarrassment.” Meanwhile, Jake Assmann, a sports host, labeled Schumer “a complete idiot,” while Town Hall’s Matt Vespa questioned the authenticity of the statement.

Radio personality Larry O’Connor simply asked, “Seriously?” and Steve McLaughlin, Rensselaer County’s executive director in New York, called the remarks “disgraceful.”

Later, Schumer did condemn the shooting during a press conference, declaring that anti-Semitism represents a significant issue globally. “It is everywhere, and it must be loudly denounced and vigorously fought at every turn,” he stated, emphasizing the collective responsibility to fight against such hatred and protect communities worldwide.

Schumer further addressed the incident on social media, labeling the anti-Semitic attack at Sydney’s Hanukkah festival as horrific and a stark reminder of the pervasive and deadly nature of anti-Semitism and hatred. He called for robust condemnation and action against it.
