Senator Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, sidestepped questions on Tuesday regarding his involvement in addressing concerns about former President Joe Biden’s mental health. This inquiry arose following excerpts from a book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios reporter Alex Thompson, titled *Original Sin: Biden’s Decline, Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again.* The book raises questions about whether Biden can continue his presidency into a second term.
While discussing the book on CNN’s “Arena with Casey Hunt,” Schumer was asked if he was aware of Biden’s mental condition. Hunt pointed out that he was present during a meeting in February 2024, where Biden was reportedly seen. Schumer responded, “Casey, I’m looking forward to it,” though he shifted the conversation to broader political issues like Medicaid cuts, rather than addressing Biden’s situation directly.
Hunt pressed again, reminding him that Biden’s decision to run again was critical, especially after losing the presidential election. Nevertheless, Schumer only repeated that he was looking forward to upcoming events and did not provide more context. This led to some obvious frustration from Hunt, who was left questioning the depth of Schumer’s answers.
Earlier that day, Schumer gave a similar evasive response when asked if he was transparent with the American public, referencing a past meeting where Biden had appeared “commanded and impressive.” There were also reports describing alarming moments around Biden, including an incident where he seemingly overlooked actor George Clooney at a fundraiser.
In another setting, Schumer dismissed queries about his sincerity when speaking to reporters. He reiterated a desire to move forward, asserting that they were simply looking ahead.
As Schumer faced scrutiny, he recalled a prior situation in February 2024 when he labeled concerns about Biden’s capabilities as “right-wing propaganda.” He then asserted, “His mental vision is amazing. It’s fine. It’s been like that for many years.” Schumer claimed to have known Biden for three decades and maintained that he was doing well.
However, subsequent reports indicated that Schumer was one of several Democratic leaders who had encouraged Biden to step back from the race.
