Schumer Accuses Republicans of Misleading Claims Amid Government Shutdown

Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, from New York, is accusing Republicans of misleading the public about the current government shutdown. On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” he described Republican claims that Democrats are closing down the government to provide medical benefits for illegal immigrants as “complete, absolute, effective lies.”

Host Joe Scarborough asked Schumer about what he called the “lie of the day” from Republicans. Schumer firmly agreed, stating, “It’s a complete, absolute, effective lie.”

Recent discussions suggest that officials in President Trump’s cabinet, including White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, are blocking Democrats from passing a spending package because they want provisions for healthcare for illegal immigrants. Leavitt criticized Democrats, stating they are attempting to close the government, which would harm American citizens. She noted, “President Trump will not force taxpayers to fund free benefits to illegal foreigners.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Miller, a senior policy advisor, posted on X that Democrats are trying to obstruct government funding bills because they don’t include free medical care for illegals.

The federal government officially shut down on Wednesday after Senate Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on spending by the end of the fiscal year on September 30th. Schumer contended that Republicans are resorting to false claims out of fear, arguing that their party has “destroyed health care” for countless Americans.

Schumer suggested that Republicans expect to pressure Democrats into submission, saying, “They thought they could barrel us down just because we wanted to fix that healthcare, but they couldn’t.” He added that the lies stem from their fear of the truth.

According to Schumer, there are “two things” Democrats aim to address during the shutdown. First, they want to demonstrate that Republicans cannot intimidate them. He also noted that Democrats will engage in various forms of advocacy, including social media campaigns and protests.

Finally, Schumer indicated that when Americans question why their healthcare costs have risen, Democrats will point to Republican policies as the cause.
