Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is advocating for Congress to prevent a government shutdown, mainly out of concern over a potential primary challenge from Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton (R-AR) or possibly Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), as speculated by Breitbart News.
After a meeting with President Donald Trump, Cotton emerged without an agreement to avert a government shutdown before the impending Wednesday deadline. He criticized Schumer in a statement, asserting that Schumer’s actions stem from “fear of a primary from AOC.” He labeled these actions as “dishonorable.”
In contrast, House Republicans, along with Rep. Jared Golden (ME), moved forward with a bill intended to fund the government until November 20. However, Senate Democrats declined to support this, opting instead to propose their own funding requests totaling an additional $1.4 trillion. Alleged details from Breitbart indicate that these funds would support initiatives including free healthcare for undocumented immigrants and funding for NPR and PBS.
Efforts by Republicans have stalled any Democrat counteroffers in the Senate, leaving Congress in a position where they must either reach a resolution by midnight Tuesday or face a government shutdown. Cotton reiterated his stance earlier in the day, noting that Schumer is “afraid” and echoed Ocasio-Cortez’s comments about a possible primary challenge for Schumer in 2028.
Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) asserted that if a shutdown occurs, it will be Schumer’s responsibility. He also mentioned that the process should avoid triggering any “partisan poison pills,” emphasizing the need to negotiate while the government remains open rather than closed.
