Senate Democrats Criticize Colleagues for Not Supporting Mamdani
Senate Democrats have labeled some of their own members as “spineless” for not backing Zoran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral candidate in New York City.
Senator Chris Van Hollen from Maryland, who did not specify names, expressed disappointment that New York Democrats have yet to rally around Mamdani, particularly after his impressive primary win earlier this year.
Interestingly, the most influential Democrat in Congress, Senator Chuck Schumer, also has not shown support for Mamdani.
Socialist Candidate Faces Lack of Support from NY Democrats
At a recent Iowa event, Van Hollen remarked, “Many Democrats representing New York remain on the sidelines. That’s the kind of spineless politics that makes people frustrated. They need to get behind him—now.”
Both Schumer, a Brooklyn native, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries have been criticized for not supporting Mamdani, despite a recent meeting where they alluded to the growing pressure from members of Congress to lend their backing.
Van Hollen continued, suggesting that the party often tends to play it too safe. “We’ve become a party that frequently sets its sails in cautious directions,” he said, noting that critics and donors have become overly attached to sanitized messaging.
Mamdani Faces Controversy in His Campaign
Reactions from Jess Jeffries’ spokesperson highlighted a different viewpoint. They stated, “Leader Jeffries will discuss the general election as November approaches,” adding an air of confusion surrounding Van Hollen’s role.
Schumer mentioned after their meeting that it was productive. “We had a good discussion and we know each other well,” he said, indicating a willingness to continue dialogue.
Interestingly, New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently came out in support of the self-proclaimed democratic socialist Mamdani. She articulated her reasoning for this endorsement in an opinion piece, acknowledging their disagreements but indicating a shared commitment to addressing the city’s challenges.
Hochul observed that she sees hopes for the city’s affordability and safety in Mamdani’s vision, emphasizing a goal of resisting political pressures, particularly from former President Trump.
Mamdani’s Allies Face Challenges
With Mamdani’s allies operating from both the far left and right, there’s a growing push to challenge established figures like Jeffries and other New York House Democrats.
Hochul herself remarked, “I cannot agree with everything Mr. Mamdani proposes, but I believe in unity against those who seek to divide us.”
Fox News has sought comments from both Schumer and Jeffries, but no immediate responses have been received.
