Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) is in a hurry to bring his career to the fore after another tragic week for the Democrats.
Schumer's recent political fiasco has split Democrats more than ever. Last week, House Republicans passed the funding bill, with President Donald Trump endorsing it, with all but one Democrats voting against it. The Trump-backed bill did that, but House Democrats at least united to their opposition.
But as the ongoing resolutions advanced to the Senate, Democrats changed their songs.
“We have a lot of good people,” Schumer told CBS Tuesday. “But I'm the best at winning a Senate seat.”
The Republican majority in the Senate needed democratic support to help the CR clear the procedural vote and ultimately avoid government shutdowns. With the Friday deadline approaching, Democrats were left to decide whether they would like to throw support behind Trump's raised CR or vote for the closure.
Schumer initially followed in the footsteps of his colleagues at home to inform him of his support for the shutdown. However, as pressure was on, Schumer said he would overturn his position and instead vote to move forward with CR. The decision sparked outrage within the Democrats, with prominent figures like former speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY). In the end, 10 Senate Democrats joined 52 Republicans to advance the fundraising bill.
Schumer avoided the shutdown, but his Democrats remained fractured.
In the aftermath, the Democratic Party's favor It was dropped To record lows, and many people have made Schumer responsible. The overall reception at the political theatre last week was very negative. Schumer postponed his much-anticipated book tour until the dust settles.
Still, Schumer I tried Ensuring Democrats he is still “the Senate's best leader.”
“We have a lot of good people,” Schumer told CBS Tuesday. “But I'm the best at winning a Senate seat.”
Schumer continued his damage control media tour and appeared on “View” on Tuesday. Schumer tried to pin down the blame on Trump when the host pushed him about his leadership.
“I wake up at 3am and sometimes I'm worried about the future of the country under these oligarchs!” I said. “We fight teeth and claws in every way possible, but you have to fight them wisely.”
“I felt an obligation to stop it,” Schumer added.
