Schumer Will Take Responsibility for Government Shutdown

Debate Over Government Shutdown Responsibility

During a recent appearance, Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) asserted that Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) bears responsibility for the possibility of a government shutdown. Johnson emphasized that Republicans are putting forth straightforward, continuous solutions, while he accused Democrats of risking government closure with “Covid-era giveaways,” reminiscent of past actions.

“There’s no partisan poison pill; there’s nothing someone can easily stumble over,” Johnson noted. He suggested that pausing for six weeks would facilitate negotiations without shutting down the government, something he believes is a challenge for Schumer to accept.

He referred to a potential shutdown as “the stupidest” and insisted that Schumer would be accountable for it entirely. Johnson urged for transparency about Schumer’s role in the situation.

Addressing the complexities, he expressed frustration over Schumer’s reluctance to negotiate, emphasizing that Republicans hold the Senate but still need bipartisan support to fund the government. “We need 60 votes, and only 53 of those are Republicans,” he explained.

Host Mike Slater questioned whether Schumer has his Democratic colleagues “in lockdown,” reflecting on a previous attempt in March when Republicans tried to push through a clean funding resolution that ultimately failed in the Senate, which he claimed upset Schumer’s political standing.

Johnson acknowledged that Republican missteps contributed to the shutdown but insisted that this situation was different. He underscored that this potential closure is a situation “manufactured by Chuck Schumer” and stressed the importance of informing the public about this reality.
