Schwarzenegger Critiques Democrats on Gerrymandering Claims
Arnold Schwarzenegger has responded to Democrats who assert that President Donald Trump is the main aggressor in the ongoing disputes over gerrymandering and redistricting.
In an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the former California governor argued that Democrats have engaged in gerrymandering for many years even before Trump became involved.
“It’s really about Democrats and Republicans, but the people are the ones who suffer,” he stated.
When host Jake Tapper questioned the fairness of blaming Republicans, Schwarzenegger replied, “No, Jake. This issue has been around for 200 years.” He underscored the extent of gerrymandering, citing Massachusetts as an example where 40% of voters had supported Trump but the Republican Party held no representation in the House.
He continued, “In New Mexico, 45% of voters backed Trump, yet there are no Republican representatives. It’s a chaotic gerrymandering situation across the nation, and we aimed to address this in California.”
Schwarzenegger is known for opposing the efforts of California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) to redistrict the state’s legislature in favor of Democrats.
“This whole matter seems more about finger-pointing—like ‘they started it, so we should too.’ That’s not the right approach. One party needs to do better than the other,” he added.
Although 62% of people reportedly support a California plan that would allow for Democrat-led redistricting in heavily Democratic areas, Schwarzenegger remains skeptical about the ongoing tactics of blame. “It all comes down to how the two parties relate, leaving the people neglected,” he commented.
