Schwarzenegger mocks Newsom with a message aimed at the Democratic redistricting efforts

Arnold Schwarzenegger Fights Against Gerrymandering in California

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is gearing up for a new battle.

The iconic action star and Republican who governed California, a predominantly Democratic state, is voicing his opposition to the potential suspension of the nonpartisan redistricting commission. This proposal, pushed by current Governor Gavin Newsom, has already sparked considerable debate.

Schwarzenegger made his stance clear with a social media post on Friday, saying, “I’m preparing for a gerrymandering fight.” He shared a photo of himself wearing a T-shirt that read, “End the gerrymandering.”

His post highlights a new proposed map that Democrats in California are considering, which could lead to the creation of up to five additional Democratic-leaning congressional seats in a state where Democrats have significant control of the legislature.

Recently, Newsom unveiled a plan in Los Angeles aimed at reconfiguring congressional districts to favor Democrats. This move, collaborating with congressional leaders, marks a strategic approach in a deeply blue California.

Interestingly, Newsom is also looking to create more Republican-friendly districts in Texas, directly countering efforts from Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Newsom declared, “Today is California’s liberation day,” implying a strong resistance to what he perceives as encroachment from Republican strategies.

While California’s road for redistricting appears complex, the Republican effort in Texas is more straightforward as they seek to revise their congressional map without facing constitutional limitations.

Newsom is advocating for a special election to allow voters to consider dismantling the nonpartisan commission that oversees district drawing. This referendum would need a two-thirds majority in the Democratic-led California legislature.

Despite skepticism, Newsom seems optimistic about the Democrats supporting the proposed changes, suggesting it could be viewed as a move to “rig the system” prior to the midterm elections.

His assertion that the current effort is in direct response to instructions from Trump points to broader tensions in American politics—and Newsom’s concerted push for a more favorable congressional map.

The National Republican Congressional Committee responded to Newsom’s plan by accusing him of undermining democracy and violating California’s constitution.

To defend his actions, Newsom emphasized that the reconfiguration process is “transparent and public,” suggesting that voter input will guide the outcome.

Newsom’s recent announcement also hints at his possible ambitions for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination and serves as a fundraising opportunity to bolster support for the statewide initiative.

Public sentiment seems to favor the nonpartisan commission, which has gained popularity since its inception over 15 years ago. Instead of outright abolishing it, Newsom and California Democrats propose temporarily replacing it with a version that serves Congress for the next few election cycles.

Schwarzenegger has strongly criticized gerrymandering, describing it as fundamentally wrong. His representative stated he opposes Texas’ approach, reflecting a broader discontent with political manipulation.

During his governorship, Schwarzenegger supported constitutional amendments that stripped politicians of power over district drawing, favoring independent committees instead.

Political analysts suggest that it will take significant effort to mobilize voters for the upcoming elections and that Schwarzenegger’s involvement could play a crucial role in influencing public opinion on this contentious issue.
