Tragic Scooter Accident in Queens Highlights Pothole Issue

This week, a man riding an electric scooter lost his life on a hazardous street in Queens, known for its numerous potholes—a concern that local residents have been voicing for years.

The stretch of Liberty Avenue in Ozone Park has accumulated hundreds of complaints since 2020, with over a dozen reports made just this year, based on city records.

According to police, the 46-year-old man was heading east on the crumbling boulevard near 106th Street when he hit a pothole, causing him to be thrown from his scooter on Monday night.

Authorities received a 911 call around 9:30 p.m. about an unconscious person on the road. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim with severe head injuries, as stated by the NYPD.

The man’s identity hasn’t been shared pending family notification. He was quickly transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, but unfortunately, he did not survive.

In response to the accident, the city’s transportation department acted quickly to repair the road. Interestingly, an analysis revealed that Liberty Street has received a striking 557 pothole reports over the past six years.

This year alone, there have been at least a dozen complaints about potholes along an eight-mile stretch of road, all of which were marked as resolved between January 1 and March 6.

However, a spokesperson for the DOT mentioned that they hadn’t seen previous complaints regarding potholes in the area recently where the accident occurred.

They expressed their condolences, stating, “This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with the victims of this crash and their families.”

As the investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Unit continues, there’s a noticeable trend in pothole issues within the city. Reports indicate that nearly 14,400 pothole complaints have been logged in New York City as of 2026. Notably, more than half of these complaints are from Queens, marking a significant 59% increase from the previous year.

The DOT has filled over 45,100 potholes this year, typically resolving these issues within two days on average. However, it was also pointed out that a substantial number of complaints—over a quarter—remain unresolved, pending, or in progress.

According to a DOT official, crews are constantly working to address these issues across all five boroughs. They noted that in just the last week, over 10,000 potholes had been filled and there are plans to resurface more than 1,100 lane miles this year.
