Colom Struggles with Stance on Child Mutilation Surgeries
Undercover footage obtained by Breitbart News features Mississippi Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom having difficulty articulating a clear stance on child mutilation surgeries. He seems to falter when recalling the specifics of a letter he signed regarding the issue. While Colom expresses that he does not believe the procedures should be legal, he simultaneously states that he wouldn’t want to see doctors prosecuted for performing them.
The two-and-a-half-minute video shows Colom becoming visibly more agitated as the conversation progresses.
Colom, who serves as a local prosecutor, admits he can’t recall details from a letter he endorsed in 2021 that criticized attempts to criminalize “gender-affirming care for transgender people.” This letter was issued by a group called Fair and Just Prosecution.
The content of the letter argues that laws prohibiting gender mutilation surgeries amount to “blatantly unconstitutional attacks on some of the most vulnerable Americans,” and it asserts that such laws would hurt public safety.
The letter is formally titled “JOINT STATEMENT FROM ELECTED PROSECUTORS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADERS CONDEMNING THE CRIMINALIZATION OF TRANSGENDER PEOPLE AND GENDER-AFFIRMING HEALTHCARE.”
Among the signatories are notable figures such as Shannon Taylor, the Democratic nominee in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, and Chesa Boudin, a former San Francisco prosecutor who faced removal in a recall election due to his lenient crime policies.
During his conversation with the undercover journalist, Colom states, “So, I’m not for gender-affirming surgery for children… a ban is not a criminal thing.” However, when pressed again, he insists that while the surgeries are not legal, he wouldn’t criminally prosecute those involved in them.
Colom appears to grow more unsettled when questioned about the life-saving implications of transgender mutilation surgeries.
He remarks, “I didn’t write the letter… I don’t remember all parts of it because it was a long time ago.” Notably, the letter was released publicly in June 2021.
Colom then asserts, “Listen, I have never been for gender-affirming surgery for children. I’m personally pro-life… I don’t think it should be legal, but I don’t think it should be criminal. I don’t think you should prosecute a doctor in court and send them to jail for — ” Here, the interviewer interjects with “mutilating children?” Colom completes his thought by saying, “– for healthcare procedures that the parent and child agree to.”
Increasingly frustrated with the exchange, Colom continues, “What I’m saying is this: It’s fine that it’s civilly, you can’t do it. Doctors cannot do it. I don’t think this is a criminal situation. Maybe you want to prosecute a doctor for that surgery, that’s great. Run for DA, you can run on that, and good luck with that policy! I stand behind my position that it’s not a criminal issue because we can’t criminalize social issues!”
Colom is currently running against Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith in the upcoming November election. She previously blocked his nomination for a federal judge position during Joe Biden’s presidency, citing concerns over significant donations from organizations linked to George Soros to Colom’s campaigns since 2015, as reported by Mississippi television station WJTV.
