Contention Over Alex Preti’s Investigation
On Tuesday, a heated exchange unfolded between CNN’s Scott Jennings and New York Times podcaster Lulu Garcia-Navarro regarding the investigation into the death of anti-ICE protester Alex Preti. Preti was shot by a Border Patrol agent during a protest in Minneapolis on Saturday. Garcia-Navarro claimed on “The Arena with Casey Hunt” that without involvement from state and local authorities, the investigation lacks credibility. Jennings countered, expressing doubt about the investigation being led by Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who had quickly deemed the deaths of Preti and another individual, Renee Good, as homicides without a proper inquiry.
Garcia-Navarro emphasized that local law enforcement must secure the crime scene, mentioning her own inability to approach the area. She raised concerns about how independent research could be trusted without local police involvement. Jennings echoed these doubts, suggesting that mistrust could stem from the quick conclusions drawn by officials like Walz and Frey.
Jennings supported a collaborative investigation between federal and local authorities, noting that President Trump has called for a thorough inquiry into Preti’s death. Meanwhile, members of the Trump administration, particularly DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, are facing scrutiny for suggesting that Preti may have violently resisted authorities, implicating him in potential domestic terrorism. Reports indicate that Preti had a gun permit, but law enforcement stated his weapon was taken from him before he was shot.
Trump, while boarding Marine One, expressed his desire for an “honorable” and “honest investigation,” stating he would personally monitor the process. After a meeting with Noem, it was reported she would not resign amid the controversy, which has led to border czar Tom Homan traveling to Minnesota at Trump’s request to address ICE operations and other issues surrounding the incident.
In the political fallout, Democratic Rep. Robin Kelly from Illinois has proposed a resolution to impeach Noem, backed by 120 co-sponsors. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also voiced support for potential impeachment proceedings, accusing Noem of allowing harmful actions by immigration authorities. Despite the controversy, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt indicated that Trump still has considerable confidence in Noem and deemed Homan’s visit as beneficial for stability and accountability in Minneapolis.
