Scouts share Arch Manning's NFL prospects following a slow start in Texas.

Arch Manning’s slow start this season doesn’t completely define his prospects in the NFL, but experts suggest a cautious approach.

A survey from ESPN involving 25 NFL scouts and executives highlighted that only one viewed Manning as the leading quarterback for the 2026 draft class.

This sentiment largely stems from the belief that Manning should consider focusing on the 2027 NFL draft after gaining more college experience.

“He’s immensely talented,” one scout shared with ESPN. “When you look at his arm strength and field awareness, it’s impressive. But he needs to take control and slow the game down.”

It’s understandable, given that this is Manning’s first year starting for the Longhorns after biding his time behind Quinn Ewers for two seasons.

His performance has been inconsistent, particularly following a 2-1 start for Texas.

In the first three games, Manning completed just 55.3% of his passes, tossing six touchdowns but also three interceptions.

Fans expressed frustration with his performance, especially since Manning was a pre-season candidate for the Heisman trophy, which added to the pressure.

Looking ahead to the game against Sam Houston State, ESPN’s “College GameDay” host brought up Manning’s struggles.

Nick Saban, who has coached numerous successful quarterbacks at Alabama, suggested that going back to basic techniques might help rebuild Manning’s confidence.

“His mechanics seem a bit off compared to last year,” Saban noted. “His footwork is also not precise, which can impact confidence.”

“You don’t just practice to get it right; you practice until you can’t get it wrong. It’s crucial to create the right habits,” he added.

Similarly, analysts Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit acknowledged the high expectations for Manning might be partially responsible for his current challenges.

“I feel like some of it falls on us,” McAfee admitted. “Before he even started this season, he was already being compared to legends.”

McAfee reflected on how strange it is that despite Manning’s lifelong experience, he struggles with open passes now. “It’s not just mechanical; there’s an emotional aspect too. Unrealistic expectations—like being told he’s better than Peyton or Eli—can weigh heavily on a young player.”
