Seahawks Secure Top NFC Seed with Win Over 49ers
The Seattle Seahawks wrapped up their season on Saturday night with a victory over the San Francisco 49ers, earning the top seed in the NFC playoffs and setting themselves up nicely for a Super Bowl run.
With this win, Seattle recorded 14 victories, marking the best regular season in the franchise’s history.
In the game, the Seahawks outgained the 49ers by a significant margin of 173 yards, totaling 363 yards themselves, and managed to clinch a 10-point win despite running many more plays—64 to San Francisco’s 42.
Though Seattle struggled in the fourth quarter, missing a field goal and turning the ball over on downs, their strong defensive performance proved pivotal. They managed to prevent those missed opportunities from becoming costly mistakes. The 49ers had a chance to close the gap but, while trying to mount a comeback, quarterback Brock Purdy was intercepted at Seattle’s 3-yard line during their best drive of the night.
This game was especially noteworthy for Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, who is in his first season with the team. He completed 20 of 26 passes for 198 yards and helped set up the only touchdown in the first quarter. This performance was a redemption of sorts for him, as he faltered in a crucial game last season against the Minnesota Vikings.
Darnold reflected on his performance in a postgame interview, mentioning that “learning from mistakes and staying calm out of the pocket” were key factors in his success this time around.
On the other hand, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy struggled, finishing with only 127 passing yards, and threw a late interception. He took a tough hit on his final throw of the night, taking a moment to regain his footing before leaving the field.
