Sean McVay Reflects on Tough Season and Future Plans

Sean McVay, the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, has developed a strong aversion to losing. Since taking charge in 2017, his record has been impressive, with only one season that could be labeled as a losing one. Yet, after the disappointing 2022 season, McVay found himself contemplating stepping back from coaching to explore potential media opportunities.

Last year was particularly rough for the Rams, ending with a 5-12 record—quite the contrast to their Super Bowl victory against the Cincinnati Bengals just a year prior. In a candid moment during a recent interview with “60 Minutes,” McVay described his mental state during this challenging period as “dark,” acknowledging that a few losses didn’t define his abilities as a coach.

During this time, it was his fiancée, Veronika Khomyn, who provided him with a critical perspective. He recounted a conversation where he expressed a desire to take a year off. Her response struck him: “That never sounded like the kind of leader you wanted to be.” This moment, as he reflects, was crucial for him.

“I think it was the wake-up call that I needed,” he admitted. “I would have been quitting. That would have been the truth. I would have been quitting because I couldn’t handle the losses,” he added, revealing how serious the situation felt at that time.

This year has been a turnaround, with the Rams recovering from that tough stretch, posting back-to-back 10-7 seasons, and even going 12-5 in 2025, reaching the NFC Championship. Although they lost to the Seattle Seahawks, who became Super Bowl champions, the journey itself was noteworthy.

McVay is still onboard, and with the goal of returning to the Super Bowl, the Rams have made significant roster changes, including acquiring Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns and bringing Aaron Donald out of retirement.

Now, facing new challenges, the Rams began their season with a game against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia. Looking ahead, they’ll return home for a Monday night matchup against the New York Giants.
