Virginia Gubernatorial Debate Highlights Tensions Over Government Shutdown
During a tense exchange in the Virginia gubernatorial debate on Thursday night, Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl Sears strongly criticized the state’s two Democratic senators, urging them to “do their jobs” and vote to end the government shutdown affecting many federal and military workers in Virginia.
Earl Sears challenged her opponent, Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger, for not pressuring Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to bring an end to the shutdown, which has severely impacted the lives of countless federal employees. “My opponents have been playing political football with federal workers all summer,” she stated. “Well, I’ll show you what love looks like.” She went on to suggest that Spanberger should contact the senators to insist they return to work and oppose the shutdown.
According to Earl Sears, only eight Democratic senators are needed to resolve the issue, and she emphasized that Virginia should play its part by appealing to Kaine and Warner to act. “When are we going to publicly say to Sen. Kaine and Sen. Warner, ‘Go and do your job and keep federal workers working?'” she asked.
In a defensive move, Spanberger highlighted the struggles of federal workers, many of whom are now working without pay. “I’m a U.S. Marine Corps veteran,” she mentioned, reflecting on how tough it is to manage such situations, particularly for service members.
She urged for collective action, commenting, “All the while, my opponents were downplaying the idea that federal workers would lose their jobs.” Instead of assigning blame, she stressed the importance of coming together and encouraging the President to restart negotiations to resolve the crisis.
When asked whether she’d urge the senators to act, Spanberger replied, “I encourage all of the Democratic senators to push this effort back to the table.” Meanwhile, Earl Sears noted that Trump has already indicated he would be willing to work on a compromise.
As the dialogue progressed, Earl Sears underscored that the current predicament reflects a lack of urgency from Democratic leadership. “Love is a verb,” she emphasized, suggesting that real commitment involves action, not rhetoric. “When are you going to ask Senators Kaine and Warner to keep federal employees working?” she concluded.
