Seattle man Cordell Goosby acquitted by reason of insanity in shooting of pregnant Eina Kwon

A man charged in a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child in Seattle has been deemed not guilty by reason of insanity.

Cordell Goosby faced charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in connection with the killing of 34-year-old Eina Kwon and the wounding of her husband, Sung Kwon.

This tragic event occurred on June 13, 2023, when Eina and her husband were en route to their jobs at the Japanese restaurant Aburi-ya Bento House and stopped at a red light around 11:15 a.m.

According to reports, Goosby ran up to the driver’s side window of their white Tesla while still brandishing a firearm.

“He fired into the window, hitting the victim inside the car. After emptying the rounds, he fled the scene,” prosecutors noted in court documents, emphasizing how his actions have negatively impacted families and communities.

Goosby was apprehended shortly after, raising his hands and exclaiming, “I did it! I did it!” according to court filings.

At the time, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell referred to the daytime shooting as an “unimaginable tragedy.”

Goosby was not legally permitted to possess a firearm due to his criminal background in Illinois, and authorities believe he used a stolen weapon during the incident.

Reportedly, a King County court indicated that the not guilty verdict due to insanity implies that Goosby “acknowledged committing the crime and consented to being admitted to a state psychiatric facility.”

Both defense and prosecution experts evaluated Goosby and concluded that he was legally insane when the shooting took place, leading the court to allow for his testimony.

Additionally, it is noted that the conditions for Goosby’s potential release will require approvals from multiple state and court entities.
