Seattle Police Chief Faces Backlash After Mass Shooting
Seattle’s police chief is receiving heavy criticism for being out of town during a mass shooting on Sunday that resulted in three fatalities. This incident is the latest in a series of challenges connected to his role, which has kept him away from his family in Chicago.
The tragic shooting took place at the annual Bite of Seattle food festival, where three individuals were killed and four others suffered injuries. Eyewitness accounts suggest that up to three gunmen exchanged fire while bystanders were inadvertently caught in the chaos.
Shon Barnes, the city’s police chief, is under fire for his absence during the shooting; he was in Dallas, Texas, participating in a conference held by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.
Investigations Continue
In connection with the ongoing investigation, a third suspect has emerged related to the shooting, with reports indicating that one of the gunmen has been found deceased.
Responding to the backlash, Barnes remarked, “I wish I had a crystal ball and could plan an act of gun violence, but I can’t.” His comments came as he faced questions regarding his frequent travels away from Seattle, as a journalist pointed out that he reportedly spends many weekends out of state while his family resides in Chicago.
When confronted with the claim about his absences, Barnes firmly denied it, stating, “That report is wrong, do you understand?” His staff urged him to move on, but the tension lingered.
He added, “I’ve worked hard for this city since the day I got here, you know?” He assured the public that he does not travel as much as people believe, emphasizing his dedication to the Seattle community. “I love this area. I love my community and they love me,” he insisted.
Seattle police suspect that the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving a small group. Mayor Katie Wilson indicated that a teenager might have fired shots into the crowd, although the specifics are still being investigated.
