Joe Mixon Signs with Seahawks
In a significant move, the Seattle Seahawks have acquired veteran running back Joe Mixon, who is 30 years old, after he completed a swift workout with the team. This decision comes as the Seahawks’ running back lineup faces mounting challenges.
Despite recently securing a 30-23 victory in Week 4 against the Chargers, the Seahawks are coping with a depleted backfield. They’ve lost Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III in free agency, and their rookie first-round pick, Jadarian Price, has just been placed on injured reserve.
Mixon, who spent the entirety of 2025 recuperating from a serious foot injury, previously enjoyed a successful Pro Bowl season with the Houston Texans in 2024, where he surpassed 1,000 rushing yards. He will initially join Seattle’s practice squad to regain his form before being considered for game time.
Entering his later playing years and returning from an extended absence makes Mixon a somewhat risky addition in today’s NFL. Moreover, a history of off-field incidents complicates the situation further.
In 2014, Mixon made headlines when video footage captured him punching an Oklahoma student, resulting in severe injuries. This led to a season-long suspension at Oklahoma and a later legal resolution involving community service. Several NFL teams reportedly chose not to draft him before the Bengals selected him in the second round in 2017.
Since joining the league, Mixon has continued to attract scrutiny. In 2023, he faced a charge related to a road rage incident, though he was later acquitted. Additionally, a tragic event occurred in March 2023 when a teenager playing a Nerf game outside his home was shot by Mixon’s sister’s boyfriend, leading to a lawsuit that was eventually settled in 2025.
However, when Mixon is healthy and on the field, he tends to perform well. Over his seven seasons with the Bengals, he earned the AFC rushing title in 2018 with 1,168 rushing yards and made a notable contribution in Super Bowl LVI, where he completed a touchdown pass.
In 2024, Mixon showcased his abilities once more, rushing for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns in just 14 games, which secured him a second Pro Bowl selection.
Now, as he finds a new opportunity in Seattle, the team is hopeful he can inject some strength into their struggling running back situation.
