Seattle's Progressive Mayor Challenges ICE Amid Crime Issues, Assures Immigrants: 'You Should Feel Safe Here'

Seattle Residents Frustrated with Mayor’s Focus on Immigration Policy Amid Rising Crime

Residents in Seattle have expressed their frustration over Democratic Socialist Mayor Katie Wilson’s emphasis on battling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), especially as violent crime seems to be escalating in the city.

Officer Kent Rooks, president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, conveyed to Fox News that the ongoing dispute between Wilson and the federal government regarding immigration issues is so perplexing that he believes she should step away from their organization.

Under Wilson’s policies, the Seattle Police Department is mandated to look into and document any instances of immigration enforcement in the community. In a statement made earlier this year, Wilson emphasized, “This is a message to my immigrant neighbors: This is your city. You should be safe here. I’m determined to do that.”

Moreover, Lu pointed out that ICE’s strategies are “disastrous” as they create tension between local police and federal law enforcement. He acknowledged that the police force is severely understaffed—by hundreds of officers—and despite these strains, they’re striving to serve the city effectively.

Reports from Breitbart News indicated that Wilson is among several blue-state Democrats who are working to obstruct ICE, with claims she backs the collection of personal data and aims to undermine federal law enforcement.

At the same time, there is a growing discontent among locals regarding the city’s approach to high crime rates, particularly concerning violent incidents. Melanie Roberts, the granddaughter of an 80-year-old dog walker who was tragically murdered during a carjacking, expressed her dissatisfaction. She highlighted that James Haynes, a recidivist who has previously served time for serious offenses, exemplifies the lack of accountability in the system. “It’s time to stop being so soft on crime,” Roberts shared, emphasizing the need for a stricter approach to law enforcement. “We need to prioritize the safety of law-abiding citizens and establish firmer consequences for those who break the law.”

There have been alarming incidents lately, including one where a repeat offender was charged with attacking an elderly woman in downtown Seattle, and recently, another man with a violent past allegedly attempted to shove a stranger onto train tracks twice, as noted by Breitbart News.
