Seattle’s New Mayor Open to Meeting Trump
Katie Wilson, the newly elected mayor of Seattle, has expressed her willingness to meet with President Donald Trump if he extends an invitation to the White House. “I’ll meet anyone,” she stated, acknowledging his role as the president.
Wilson recently secured a narrow victory over Democratic Mayor Bruce Harrell in the elections held earlier this month. Her political views closely align with those of Zoran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York City, advocating for increased taxes on government-subsidized grocery stores for wealthy individuals and pushing for universal childcare. While Mamdani has garnered more national attention, Wilson’s win in Washington’s largest city is still noteworthy.
Interestingly, Mamdani’s recent meeting with Trump might have set the stage for a potential Wilson-Trump discussion, where they touched on crucial issues like public safety and affordability in New York.
Despite heated remarks exchanged between Mamdani and Trump, with both labeling each other as “fascist” and “communist,” Wilson does not view such meetings as betrayals. Instead, she believes they are integral to her success as Seattle’s next mayor.
In her view, many on the progressive left understand that enacting bold policies requires dialogue beyond just close allies. “You can’t just talk to your friends or use the mayor’s office as a soapbox,” she added.
Yet, Wilson remains somewhat reserved on certain topics. She has had mandated discussions with figures like Washington Democratic Governor Bob Ferguson, and often declines requests from national media. Notably, she hasn’t commented on Trump’s past label of her as a “communist.”
Wilson campaigned on creating a Seattle “unlike Trump” and aligns herself with a renewed focus on socialism, similar to other national figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Both Wilson and Mamdani emphasize affordability, a crucial theme that could influence voters in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
As of now, the White House has not provided any remarks regarding this evolving political landscape.
