Auburn’s Hugh Freeze Upset Over Controversial Loss to Oklahoma
Auburn’s head football coach, Hugh Freeze, expressed his dissatisfaction following the team’s loss to Oklahoma, admitting he was not impressed with how certain touchdowns were counted. The score was 24-17, in favor of the Sooners, with a key moment involving a wide-open touchdown by Isaiah Sategna III.
This particular play later drew scrutiny, as officials deemed it illegal and suggested Sategna should have acted more sportsmanlike. During the second quarter, Sategna appeared to run towards the sideline but stopped unexpectedly, leading Auburn’s defense to believe he had gone out of bounds. When the ball was snapped, it was thrown to him for a quick score.
In a postgame interview, Freeze acknowledged he needed to improve his handling of such situations, mentioning potential penalties for criticizing officials. Notably, ESPN, after reviewing the game, agreed that the play in question was indeed illegal.
Freeze had cautioned his staff about similar tactics “every offseason,” but Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, defended the play as strategic rather than deceptive, asserting Sategna had checked in with officials beforehand.
The SEC supported Auburn’s position, referring to “NCAA Football Rules 9-2, Article 2,” which prohibits using deceptive tactics to confuse opponents. According to the SEC’s statement, such actions include simulated movements that mislead the defense.
Freeze was also frustrated by another contentious moment involving Sategna. Auburn cornerback Kane Lee seemed to have recovered a fumble, running it back for a touchdown. Auburn believed Sategna had caught the ball before losing it, but after review, officials ruled it an incomplete pass.
“I can’t understand how that was a fumble,” Freeze remarked. “Honestly, I thought he had it and ran it in. It just didn’t make sense to me.”
Unfortunately for Auburn, both of those calls went against them, which heightened the disappointment surrounding their narrow loss.
