Second Mayoral Candidate, Her Daughter, and Two Supporters Shot Dead in Mexico Before Elections

Tragic Shooting of Mexican Mayoral Candidate During Live Broadcast

In a shocking incident, a mayoral candidate in Mexico was fatally shot while being broadcast live. Authorities suspect cartel involvement.

Yesenia Lara Gutiérrez, a candidate from the Morena Party, was killed on Sunday as cartel gunmen confronted her supporters in Texistepec, Veracruz. The incident unfolded over a Facebook live stream, capturing the moment she was greeting the crowd before the attack occurred.

Gutiérrez’s daughter was also a victim in this tragic event, along with two others whose identities remain undisclosed, according to Veracruz Governor Rocio Nare Garcia. Additionally, three more individuals sustained injuries during the shooting.

Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum, also affiliated with the Morena Party, indicated that no clear motive had been established for the attack but confirmed that federal support is being provided to local officials for their investigation. “We are coordinating especially with the Secretary of Security and have received all the support we need during this election period from Veracruz and Durango,” she stated.

This shooting follows a series of violent incidents, including the targeting of other party members in previous weeks. Data from human rights organizations reported over 660 politically motivated attacks on civilians and facilities in Mexico last year.

The gubernatorial election is set for June 1.
