Secret Service agent accused in Miami Kappa Alpha Psi hazing incident

Secret Service Agent Arrested for Alleged Hazing Incident

A U.S. Secret Service agent has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including attempted manslaughter, after reportedly taking part in a hazing ritual that caused severe injuries to two individuals.

Marquez Pinder, 29, who serves in the Miami field office, is currently under house arrest with a GPS monitoring device. The allegations stem from an incident where he held the position of “pledge director” during a lengthy hazing event for the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity’s Miami chapter.

According to court documents, Pinder, alongside two other fraternity members, engaged in physical hazing that involved “rowing” and striking the victims with canes. One victim reported disturbing symptoms, including “blood in the urine,” but her concerns were dismissed by the fraternity during the first hazing session. Law enforcement later detailed that this victim required intubation at a hospital due to her serious condition, which necessitated emergency measures to prevent further health decline.

Another victim suffered significant tissue damage from a blow, which required surgical intervention and extensive skin grafting. Investigators noted that both victims faced extreme treatment during the hazing process, described as being subjected to stress positions and physical punishment.

Pinder faces five felony charges, including several counts of aggravated assault and attempted manslaughter. His alleged accomplices, Jared James and Elijah Deius, have also been charged with similar offenses.

Currently, Pinder is on vacation and has been with the Secret Service since September 2023. A representative from the agency emphasized their commitment to addressing any criminal allegations involving staff and cooperating with ongoing investigations. In a somewhat reassuring tone, they highlighted the organization’s dedication to accountability and integrity.

Kappa Alpha Psi, a fraternity founded in 1911, has a stated policy of zero tolerance toward hazing. A university spokesperson clarified that the local chapter involved is not affiliated with the University of Miami, although one of the victims is a law student there.

This situation raises concerns about hazing practices and the responsibilities of organizations in ensuring the safety of their members. In cases like this, the fallout can be significant not just for those directly involved but for the broader community as well.
