A whistleblower told the House Judiciary Committee that the Secret Service held a briefing on July 8, 2024, to discuss former President Donald Trump’s rally and Jill Biden’s planned rally in the same state on July 13, 2024, and that Secret Service officials had already said that week that the agency’s “resources were limited.”
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) made the revelations in a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Thursday, saying that Western Pennsylvania Fusion Center According to WPFC, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service (USSS) Tim Burke told his law enforcement partners that USSS resources were limited that week because he was in Washington, D.C. covering the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit.
Jordan asked Wray, “Was security presence at President Trump’s events limited due to resource constraints around the NATO summit and First Lady Jill Biden’s event in Pittsburgh?”
According to a White House media advisory, Biden was scheduled to arrive at Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 4:00 pm and then speak at the Italian-American Sons and Daughters of America dinner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 5:00 pm.
Trump was scheduled to begin speaking at 5 pm, but ended up taking the stage at 6:02 pm, about nine minutes after the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, shot Trump, wounding him in the ear.
Jordan said the FBI, one of many agencies represented in the WPFC, is the lead agency in federal investigations and a key source of information on potential special-incident threats in its jurisdiction. He noted that the FBI is also investigating assassination attempts.
Given this role, Chairman Jordan, whose committee is responsible for oversight of the FBI, is calling on the FBI to explain itself in the wake of the nearly successful assassination attempt that nearly killed President Trump, killed innocent rally-attendee Cory Comperatore, and injured two other rally-attendees.
Jordan has asked Ray to answer the following questions by July 23:
- How many agents, analysts and support personnel has the FBI committed to the investigation?
- Was there coordination between the FBI, USSS and WPFC prior to President Trump’s July 13 event?
- How many buildings needed to be secured inside and outside the security perimeter at President Trump’s event on July 13?
- Why was the roof of the AGR International Building left unprotected?
- How much time passed between when the shooter was identified as a potential threat and when the assassination attempt occurred?
- How much time passed between when a local police officer encountered a gunman on a sloping roof and when the assassination attempt took place?
- Did the FBI interview local police officers who encountered the shooter?
- What does the FBI’s assessment of the perpetrator’s cellphone and digital activity indicate about his actions and movements in the days and hours leading up to the assassination attempt?
- Is the FBI investigation limited to the shooter and his motives, or will it also include the security failures that led to the assassination attempt?
- Was the security posture at President Trump’s events limited by resource constraints associated with the NATO summit and First Lady Jill Biden’s event in Pittsburgh?
- How did communication breakdowns between various law enforcement agencies affect local law enforcement and the USSS’s ability to identify the shooter as a potential threat and mitigate that threat before the shooter took action?
- Once the threat was known or detected, what steps did the USSS take to remove or conceal President Trump?
Additionally, to help us improve our monitoring, please provide us with the following documents and information:
- Any FBI reports, analyses, or threat assessments conducted or prepared that refer to or relate to the July 13, 2024 events of President Trump.
- All documents and communications between WPFC and FBI personnel regarding President Trump’s events, including, but not limited to, requests by WPFC for additional analytical resources.
- All documents and communications between the FBI and USSS regarding President Trump’s July 13th events.
- All FD-1023 and FD-302 pertaining to classified human source reports and reviews of ongoing and completed domestic terrorism investigations in the Pittsburgh area regarding potential threat information directed toward President Trump’s July 13 event.
Jordan has asked for the materials to be provided as soon as possible, but by July 23, 2024.
